Borrowing the concept of Korea Artist Prize, a major modern art awards program of Korea, the project chooses website of the year. With the fundamental qualities of the web - openness, sharing, participation and web accessibility - at its core, the event takes off by introducing a manifesto on its selection criteria. The event identifies and nominates websites that meet the qualities mentioned above.
The Reasons why you recommend the website.Although anyone can apply on the website (projecthashtag.net/ webprize2021), applicants must meet at least one of the criteria stated in the manifesto. Websites are evaluated based on whether they meet the criteria they checked off when applying. Eligible websites are nominated and invited to the award. The award itself is offered in the form of performance; awards are provided online as it is difficult for candidates to attend the event.
The workshop allows participants to see if a website’s accessibility is working well using a reader program called ‘Screen Reader’ that reads text out loud for the visually impaired. Three out of ten most visted websites, including web portals, galleries, public organizations, restaurants and malls, are selected by Screen Reader. Then Screen Reader reads out contents of the websites to participants who are selected online in advance. The participants draw their perception of the websites – its design, information on the website, etc. – based on the audio. Then they share their drawings with others and see what was different and what can be done to improve web accessibility. The drawings are processed into images and put on display. The audience are then encouraged to examine the images and guess what the websites are.
Meaning alternative, ALT is an HTML tag that replaces website images with texts.
‘ALT website’ is developed based on the technique, which contains the ALT text version of images on the current MMCA website. The project aims to allow the audience to realize ALT text on the MMCA website is limited to providing the names of artists and their works, rather than providing full description. ALT text is translated into posters and put in kiosks or prints during the exhibition period.
Are you saying deleting my ex’s photos helps us protect the environment? Yes, that’s true. We can easily contribute to making our environment greener by simply emptying trash and deleting data we no longer need on our computers. In fact, intangible digital data from useless copies to unimportant screenshots and files full of past memories all exist in form in data centers in Wonhyo-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul and the Arctic. Physical, active data centers release carbon, heat, carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas just like any other industrial facilities. Can we also start a digital movement to protect the environment, just like the no plastic movement? #DigitalDetox performance marks the very beginning of the movement.
#DigitalDetox is a participatory performance where a visitor enters a space for one person with his or her device and deletes junk files. The sound of the visitor deleting junk data is played through speakers in the exhibition venue. The total size of data deleted throughout the exhibition period is shared on the website and projected on the wall of the exhibition venue.

The scenario is based on research about contemporary discourse on environmental issues, duplication of artworks and the idea of ownership, which are a number of issues caused by cryptocurrency tokens that now use visual arts based on digital media. An apocalyptic writing is created based on fictions – hyperstition – formed in the early 21st century around the CCRU (Cybernetic Culture Research Unit). Assuming the scenario is our future, the scenario is read out loud along with relevant visual data (images, videos, gifs, etc.).
